Root Canal Treatment Amsterdam

Dentista helps you enjoy and keep your teeth for a lifetime. Preferably with your own teeth. Do you have inflammation in a tooth or molar nerve? If so, root canal treatment might be necessary to preserve that tooth.

Root canal treatment at Dentista

Root canal treatment is technically a very difficult treatment. Our dentists are very experienced in performing root canal treatments. For the more specialized/difficult treatments, you will be referred to our dental endodontists within Lassus Dentists.

What is root canal treatment?

Every tooth or molar has a nerve. That nerve is in a tiny canal that runs through the root. If such a nerve is inflamed, you need root canal treatment. Also called endodontic treatment or nerve treatment. This is because such an inflamed nerve does not heal by itself.

Every tooth or molar has one or more (root) canals. Dentists call this the pulp. The pulp is living tissue and consists of nerve fibers and blood vessels. Diseases can develop on the pulp, such as inflammation.

Dental pulp can become inflamed due to a cavity, leaking filling or a fall, for example. This can cause problems for the tooth, but also for the jawbone. Diagnosing, preventing and treating these diseases is called endodontology, a separate part of dentistry.

What if I don’t get treatment?

Inflammation of your dental nerve can occur for many reasons. It is not always accompanied by severe symptoms immediately, but continuing to run with it is not wise.

Without treatment, the inflammation proliferates and becomes increasingly painful. The tooth can also become discoloured. If you wait too long, the tooth is not even salvageable, and extraction is the only option.

So, even when you are in doubt about a toothache, we recommend you make an appointment as soon as possible. We then determine what is going on through tests—and perhaps an additional X-ray—which may show that you need root canal treatment.

Fortunately, being nervous is not necessary. Because of the anaesthesia, it is almost always painless. After the treatment, you may have some post-operative pain. You can combat this with paracetamol or ibuprofen. The pain usually subsides within two days. If it lasts longer, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Common symptoms of root canal inflammation

The symptoms that your dental pulp is inflamed are sometimes very obvious:

  1. Prolonged pain when drinking hot or cold beverages;
  2. Spontaneous pain and pain that causes you to wake up at night;
  3. Pain at close quarters.

However, not every inflammation hurts. Sometimes inflammation is not discovered until an x-ray of your teeth is taken or after clinical tests. Therefore, always have your teeth checked periodically for cavities and inflammation.

Treatment

Root canal treatment looks as follows;

Step 1: The dentist first takes an X-ray of the root canals to see where the inflammation is.

Step 2: The next step is for the dentist to numb the area around the inflamed area and open your tooth at the top.

Step 3: Next, the dentist removes the inflamed and dead tissue. Also, your tooth is cleaned with small felts and disinfectant liquid.

Step 4: The space created by the small felts is filled with rubber felts and finished with normal padding.

Step 5: The entrance to the tooth is closed with a temporary or permanent filling. If your molar or tooth is very weakened, you may choose to place a crown instead of a regular filling.

The treatment is virtually painless because you will be sedated. You may experience post-treatment pain. We recommend that you take a paracetamol or ibuprofen.

Retreatment

In some rare cases, after a root canal treatment, it happens that the inflammation does not heal completely or you experience the symptoms again. In most cases, a new root canal treatment (herendo) allows you to keep your tooth.

At Dentista Amsterdam, we always see if the treatment is successful immediately or if a re-treatment is needed.

Through the new treatment, all root canals are re-cleaned and filled. During treatment, the dentist takes an X-ray to monitor the progress of the treatment.

Reimbursement of root canal treatment

Root canal treatment is not covered by the basic insurance. If you have supplementary dental insurance, however, root canal treatment is often largely reimbursed. Always consult your health insurance to be sure or check our health insurance reimbursement check.
