Gums Treatment
Dentista pays attention not only to your teeth but also to your gums. After all, healthy gums are essential for enjoying your teeth for a long time. And also very important for your overall health. That’s why our dentists, dental hygienists, and periodontists keep a close eye on the condition of your gums and treat them when necessary. We proactively carry out regular checkups and recommend gums treatment if it is necessary.
Gums protect and line the jawbone and roots of your teeth. Healthy gums are a nice light pink, not swollen, tight around your teeth and do not bleed when brushing. You’ve probably heard it many times, but proper brushing and flossing are essential to keeping your gums healthy.
By doing so, you also take good care of your overall health. Unhealthy, inflamed gums strain the immune system.
Do you suffer from slightly inflamed, bleeding gums (gingivitis) or have tartar? Then, it’s time to have our dental hygienist clean your teeth. You’ll receive immediate education and instructions on how to keep your mouth as healthy as possible.
If there is too much space between your teeth and gums, we call it pockets. Pockets can cause your jawbone to become inflamed as well (periodontitis). Periodontitis affects the jawbone, and teeth can then become loose. Eventually, you may even lose them. Treatment at the dental hygienist and/or periodontist is necessary to prevent this.
First, we examine how deep the pockets are. Our dentists and dental hygienists use a system: the Dutch Periodontal Screening Index (DPSI).
If this test shows that the pockets are 4 millimetres or deeper, then something must be done.
If we see that your jawbone is already slightly affected but your gums have not receded, the dental hygienist can try to fix it. By removing tartar and thoroughly cleaning root surfaces one tooth at a time.
If you have a compromised jawbone and receding gums, you may need an additional appointment with a periodontist after the comprehensive treatment by the dental hygienist. He or she will determine if further gums treatment is necessary to prevent tooth loss.
After pocket treatment, we continue to monitor how your gums are doing.
After three months, you’ll come back, and we’ll see if your gum health has improved. We will discuss when it’s best to come back for healthy-mouth maintenance by the dental hygienist.
